Cheetahs and tigers are both awesome cats. Cheetahs are very fast and live in the African savannah. Tigers are great swimmers and live mostly in the Asian rain forests. But what do cheetahs and tigers have in common in the way they look or hunt?
Even though cheetahs and tigers are both cats, they look totally different. Cheetahs have tan colored fur with black spots. They have smaller teeth than other big cats and a bigger nose. Their claws are, unlike other cats’, semi-retractable. So, the cheetah’s claws are always somewhat un-sheathed.
Cheetahs need to hunt for their food because they are carnivores. Cheetahs stalk their pray until it can’t get closer without being noticed then it chases its prey at an amazing speed, 60-70 miles per hour!!!!! The cheetah is the fastest land mammal in the world. Their semi-retractable claws act as cleats to help the cheetah run faster. Their big noses help them take in the extra air necessary needed to run fast.
On the other hand, tigers look way different from cheetahs. Tigers have orange, black, and white striped fur. They have big teeth, the longest ones are 3 inches long! Their nose is smaller than the cheetah’s. They have retractable claws so they can keep their claws sharp.
Tigers need to hunt as well because they are also carnivores. Tigers stalk their prey like cheetahs do, but unlike cheetahs they ambush their prey with razor sharp claws and huge teeth. They ambush their prey because they are not particularly fast at a speed of 35-40 miles per hour. They rank 16th on the fastest land mammal scale. Their long claws help them climb trees.
So both cheetahs and tigers are awesome cats. They are similar in some ways and different in others. Nevertheless, they are always awesome.
