A Tale of Two Cities?
By Will D Language Arts Compare and Contrast Essay October 30, 2013 A tale of two cities[1]? I was born in Santa Clarita, California, and I spent the first seven years of my life there until in 2009, we moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Coeur d’Alene, really? A tiny little town in the middle of nowhere! How would I survive in a place like that so different from my birth town? My life, as I knew it, was over. I was in for a revelation. Sure Coeur d’Alene was different, but it was also similar to my birth town. Santa Clarita is thirty minutes north from the large city of Los Angeles in Southern California while Coeur d’Alene is also about thirty minutes from another large city: Spokane, the second largest city in Washington (Spokeman.com). Coeur d’Alene was founded in 1879, but became was incorporated in 1887 (Encyclopedia Britannica Online), one hundred years before Santa Clarita that has just celebrated its 25th anniversary (City of Santa Clarita: 25th Anniversary). Both cities are surrounded by mountains. Santa Clarita is nestled in a valley, surrounded by the Santa Susana Mountains, while Coeur d’Alene is surrounded by mountains that are part of the Rocky Mountain range. Although the mountains in Santa Clarita are tall, they cannot be compared to the granite towers near Coeur d’Alene. The two cities have trees, but they are different. Santa Clarita has a few evergreens, trees that do not change or lose their leaves in the fall, and palm trees are everywhere; on the other hand, Coeur d’Alene has pine tree forests, woodlands, and trees that changes color and lose their leaves in the fall. With a size of 48 square miles, Santa Clarita is almost double the size of Coeur d’Alene, 26 square miles, (City of Coeur d’Alene). However, the Californian city’s population, 200, 000 residents, (City of Santa Clarita) is almost four times larger! Both cities have two major highways/freeways that run through them. But that is where the highway similarities end. The traffic in the Coeur d’Alene highways flow freely all day long unless there is an accident, congestion is extremely rare. Not so, in Santa Clarita where the freeways are always full of cars and move slower than turtles during rush hour. Coeur d’Alene does not seem to have rush hour. Although distances are short in both places, it could take a long time to go five miles in Santa Clarita. Have you ever heard of sunny Southern California? Well, it is true. You can wear shorts all year round. But sunny comes with a price: the summers are scorching, above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In North Idaho, where Coeur d’Alene is, there are four different seasons: summers are usually mild, and rarely the temperature gets over 90 degrees Fahrenheit; springs are rainy, falls are chilly, windy, and rainy, and in winter it rains and snows. The different seasons provide opportunities for many activities depending on the season: swimming, golf, hiking, skiing, and even hunting and fishing. Do not get me wrong, you can do all these things if you live in Santa Clarita, but you may have to sit in traffic for a while to get to the activities. I have been in Coeur d’Alene for the last four and a half years, and I have learned that not only my life is not over, but also that this tiny little town in the middle of nowhere has become my hometown. Even though I thought that the two cities seemed to be so different, I found out that in many ways they are alike. Works Cited "Census: Spokane Remains State’s Second-largest city." Spokesman.com. Have you ever thought, which should I get as a new pet, a cat or a dog? This paper will help you decide between which one suits your personality. A cat is nimble on it's feet and very alert, this makes them excellent hunters. A dog is more laid back but fast, which makes them good hunters. Cat's may want to play more if they are house-cats, whereas dog's will mostly want to just lay on your lap. Cats see the shades of green and the shades of blue, but while they can distinguish between what the color red and the color yellow is, they cannot recognize other colors very good. Although you may think that a cat just descended from a tiger or lion, it actually descended from an ancient carnivorous cat called a miacid, which lived 62 million years ago. Whereas dog's were descended from wolves, which is why dogs howl at night and also growl. A cat is most closely related to the miacid because it is small, and has very, very sharp and small claws. Dog's are most closely related to wolves; they have almost exactly similar teeth and somewhat the same size. Dogs are widely known for their help in bird hunting. They bark when they see the bird and allow the hunters to shoot down the goose or duck, therefore they can be very useful in those aspects. They can also be the most loving creatures on the face of the earth. Dogs can feel emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, and stress. Emotions makes them very good sympathizers when you need comfort. Although, when you own a dog, he requires constant care, if you do not brush them at least once or twice every week your dog can develop serious knots. He might be hurt if you try to brush him after a long time of not. They also require a lot of food and a fresh water supply to be healthy, as well as walks and sleep. The common house-cats are known for their caring and love. Cats can sense emotion as well, and will comfort you. They will try to bring their owners “gifts” of mice and snakes to show their love. Cats need constant brushing three times a week otherwise they will develop serious knots that will not be able to be brushed out. Even though cats do not need walks they do still need to be played with if they are indoor cats because otherwise they become restless and they will start to attack their owners. In conclusion, my opinion is that cats and dogs have their differences, but are also very alike. Some can be moody and some can be caring. Some can be steadfast and some can be lazy, But all have their own personality and all are different. Whichever one suits your personality is best for you, not whichever one is better than the other. While they may hate each other, they still are alike and different. Crocodile V. Alligator
by AJ M Most people think there’s no difference between alligators and crocodiles. Do you think there is? If you said no then you’re incorrect. There is a difference. Want to learn more? Just continue reading. American alligators are the apex predators of the Florida Everglades and South East United States. Their only true predators are humans. In 1967 through 1986 the species was in danger of extinction, but now has made a full recovery. The American alligators main food sources are: Turtles, fish, small mammals and birds, but humans normally don’t get consumed. Crocodiles have an interesting history. Dinosaurs are the closest non-bird relatives of the crocodile so that makes them modern dinos. When breeding season begins the males make a bellowing grunt ‘song’ that says to other males “don’t you dare get any closer!” and to females “mate with me!” Another cool fact about them is that they have the camouflage of the century. They can blend in with just about any natural environment especially underwater. Crocodiles and alligators are much alike but, have some key differences. For example, when their jaws are closed, crocodiles’ bottom teeth poke out and alligators’ do not. One of their differences is that a crocodile snout is more triangular than the alligator’s which is more rounded. Another difference is where they live, American alligators mainly in the Florida Everglades and Louisiana, while the crocodile lives in southern Mexico, Caribbean, and Cuba, with small populations in Florida. One characteristic that they share is that they both have an infinite amount of teeth. Another cool thing that they have in common is that their eyes shine at night which allows them to see better in the dark. Just because crocodiles and alligators have mouthfuls of teeth giant gaping jaws and scale covered bodies doesn’t mean they’re the most deadly animal in the world! In fact they are absolute relics of the past. All they want to do is try to survive and that is acceptable of any animal. In truth creatures that look scary just get themselves a bad reputation. All information on alligators comes from savanna River ecology laboratory and all information on crocodiles comes from people.wcsu.edu/pinout/herpetology/cacutus/. Definition Essay Topic:
Math In definition, the dictionary says this is what math is: “the science of numbers, quantities, and shapes and the relations between them”. This is one definition from the online Merriam-Webster definitions of math. This quickly tells us that math is a form of science that uses numbers and shapes. Lets see what math really is. Math, in terms, is in everything. Try and name something math isn't in. It tells your computer what to do, it is how hot your sweat pants are, and even how many words you could read, write, or type a minute. You might say, “But Emmett, how can math be in my video game? Math is too boring to be in a video game.” My reply, is if you think math is boring, then your wrong. Math may be the dreaded school subject, but it tells your video game how to work, shows the animations on it, and even when you play football, when go forward 3 yards, that's math. One way math has impacted my life is that it was always my strong subject. So the years I spent in elementary school, I helped others with math. Even now, I still sometimes over to the elementary school I used to go to, and tutor math. That is one way math has impacted me. From tutoring to television to video games to chess, math is used. Math runs your computer, television, and video games. In chess, math is used in notation, number of moves, and how long you game was. Math tutoring was just one experience in my life that involved math. How has it impacted you? So the real question is, what is something that does not have math? One person said faith. Well, how long have you had faith ore believed in a certain faith. Death. How many people grieved when you died, how old were you, how many kids did you have? Another person said love, but pretty quickly they found out 1+1=baby. So, yeah, I thought and thought and came to the conclusion: my desk doesn't have math. But then I thought, and realized, how many boards in the desk, how much wood, how much weight? I have come to the conclusion everything has math. Did you know numbers go on forever? If you get to a million, there is always a million and one. Gotten to infinity? There is always infinity and one. Is there anything between one and two? Yes. In fact, they are called decimals, and are written like this: 1.702. there are unlimited decimals in between two numbers like 9.97893, 9.97894, etc. You have learned a nice bit about decimals. Now for fractions, they are almost the same thing; just written in a different form, like 3/4=0.75, .5= 1/2. That is a basic. Fractions are numbers that can be divided easily, like 3/6= 3 divided by 6. Fractions are not always easy to divide though. As you go on, and you 4+99-41.3 over 23, you would wish you had studied. In conclusion, everything has math. I hope you all learned from this that everything has math, even the earth itself. Thank you. This is for educational purposes only. I also hope you learned about decimals and fractions. I hope you all learned this or that about math, and that no matter what you do has math. Also, I hope you all enjoyed this essay. I'd like to thank all of you readers out there who took the time to read this. I would also like to take note that all of this is credible; not Wikipedia. Those question responses at the top came from the Yahoo! answers forum. This is Emmett Cleere signing out. Derek Z October 31, 2013
Skinks and Geckos What’s a skink? What’s a gecko? Does anyone even care? Then why is the author writing this paper? First of all, a skink is a lizard, like a gecko, and is not to be confused with a skunk which is a very smelly mammal. Second of all, the reader must realize that geckos and skinks are very different. While skinks and geckos are two different lizard types, they have many similarities as well. At first glance, the two may look very similar. At least they would be recognizable as lizards. However, geckos have short stubby bodies with a thick fat tail, often in various shapes, such as oval, leaf-tailed, or cylindrical. They also have a rounded arrow shaped head. The long limbed geckos have teensy tiny hairs on the bottoms of their feet, which allow them to walk on walls and ceilings. Geckos are nocturnal, meaning they are active during the night. Skinks, on the other hand, look like a snake with legs. They have a rounded nose, like a snake, and the body looks long and sinuous just like a snake. Their short stubby limbs are designed for tunneling underground to create burrows for hibernating and laying eggs. Skinks are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. Skinks and geckos are both ambush predators. They stalk their prey, keeping out of sight, then dart toward the prey and clamp their powerful jaws down on the unsuspecting insect. They both eat insects most people would consider pests, such as crickets, grasshoppers, spiders, and moths. Some species of geckos and skinks are large enough to devour mice and other small rodents. Skinks and geckos both live in temperate and tropical zones. In other words, they prefer hot and humid climates. Although geckos and skinks may look alike at first glance, they are two very different lizards. Their colorful appearance and interesting nature make them fun pets. Their mysterious natures make them fun to study and learn about. It’s a KITTY!!!!!!
By: Luke S Intermediate Language Skills A: Composition Compare & contrast essay 10/29/2013 Cheetahs and tigers are both awesome cats. Cheetahs are very fast and live in the African savannah. Tigers are great swimmers and live mostly in the Asian rain forests. But what do cheetahs and tigers have in common in the way they look or hunt? Even though cheetahs and tigers are both cats, they look totally different. Cheetahs have tan colored fur with black spots. They have smaller teeth than other big cats and a bigger nose. Their claws are, unlike other cats’, semi-retractable. So, the cheetah’s claws are always somewhat un-sheathed. Cheetahs need to hunt for their food because they are carnivores. Cheetahs stalk their pray until it can’t get closer without being noticed then it chases its prey at an amazing speed, 60-70 miles per hour!!!!! The cheetah is the fastest land mammal in the world. Their semi-retractable claws act as cleats to help the cheetah run faster. Their big noses help them take in the extra air necessary needed to run fast. On the other hand, tigers look way different from cheetahs. Tigers have orange, black, and white striped fur. They have big teeth, the longest ones are 3 inches long! Their nose is smaller than the cheetah’s. They have retractable claws so they can keep their claws sharp. Tigers need to hunt as well because they are also carnivores. Tigers stalk their prey like cheetahs do, but unlike cheetahs they ambush their prey with razor sharp claws and huge teeth. They ambush their prey because they are not particularly fast at a speed of 35-40 miles per hour. They rank 16th on the fastest land mammal scale. Their long claws help them climb trees. So both cheetahs and tigers are awesome cats. They are similar in some ways and different in others. Nevertheless, they are always awesome. :)---work sited page---(: "Mammals | Cheetah." Cheetah. City vs. Suburb Ok its fight night at the compare contrast boxing arena tonight its cities vs. suburbs ready, set, fight! Okay I’ll start it off my name is city, I light it up day or night. I am huge not small. Though I’m cramped I have tall and lean buildings. I have five star restaurants and downtown designer shops. Okay step aside hot shot. My turn. My name is Suburb Though I look small I am humongous as big as some cities. Though I don’t have stores or restaurants. I offer lots of parks. Okay boys you had your fun. But this is called compare and contrast arena. So you have to compare yourselves too. Okay we both house citizens. We both have shopping. Plus construction that happens in both of our areas. We both have restaurants not as many as city. K.O! the winner for me is Suburb. Out of the choices you’ll pick what I thought. I live in a suburban area. If you’re a mayor city should be your chose. if you like country suburban is you Have you ever wondered if dogs are smarter than humans? I have. Dogs have many skills. Some of the skills that dogs might have include: saving people in water and snow, sniffing out bombs and criminals, and helping handicapped people. Dogs can be smart in many ways but they still don't have some abilitys that us humans have. They also have abilities that humans have like traction in the pads of there paws.
Humans also have many abilities. Some abilities we have are caring for ourselves, organization, inventing, and the ability to be civilized. Humans have something called aposable thumbs which give us the ability to pick up things unlike dogs, who only have paws. Humans tend to learn a lot more in their lifetime. In my opinion humans are smarter than dogs. I also know that some dogs are smarter than others because they were bread to be smart in subjects like hunting, guarding, and just being there. Humans are made for pretty much everything taking care of others, inventing, doing certain jobs for their profession. Some people may think that dogs are smarter. Dogs can be smarter and better than humans at certain things. Dogs lack in the variety of things that they can learn. Dogs with a certain skill learn a lot about that skill. The fact is dogs are probably not smarter than humans. Dogs can do things that humans can't and humans can do some things that dogs can't. Humans have a wider range of learning than dogs. Therefor my conclusion is humans are smarter than dogs. Country and Classical by,Aileen
I used to think that all melodies or songs were just music. Then I went to a concert and found that different sounding pieces had names! Classical, Pop, Jazz, Rock, Country, Hip-hop, etc. My favorites are Classical and Country. Both types of music have similarities and differences. First, in Classical music, an oratorio has lyrics from the scriptures or is religious. Cantatas are like oratorios but don't have to be religious and aren't as long. For example, G. F. Handel's oratorio, The Messiah, is based on scripture and is religious. Country music lyrics usually tells a story. Taylor Swift's song, Fifteen, is a love song that has meaning. Similarly, both kinds of music can have singers. In Country music, it usually has a singer. In Classical music, it is in oratorios as well as cantatas. People usually will have a bright or nasal voice when they sing with a Country style. When singing classical music, they are using the back of the throat and have a dark or more covered tone. Lastly, country music uses guitars, drums, fiddles, keyboard, etc. Some famous singers are: Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, and Garth Brooks. However, Classical music orchestras are typically composed of strings and woodwinds: violins, violas, cellos, harps, flutes and clarinets playing with an accompaniment, usually piano or organ. Some famous classical composers are: Handel, Bach, and Beethoven. Knowing the differences really helped when I needed to place a song. I also didn't have to think as much to get the answer. There are many differences and similarities if you look closely at music. I like the attitude when singing Country music with friends, but I also appreciate the soothing feeling when I play Classical pieces.
