Species can be called extinct is by a general sense. When they are said to be extinct in the general sense it means that it faces the risk of extinction, but it isn't necessarily protected under federal law. The other term is legal sense. What it means to be in a legal sense is when the species is protected by federal law and is on the US Endangered species list. They also characterized legally as a animal or plant species in risk of becoming extinct in all or a significant part of it's range.
The Endangered Species Act was made in 1973 and signed by President Nixon. The ESA is to protect species from going to extinction from global economy. What they also want to do is help the ecosystems that they depend on. "Nothing is more priceless and more worthy of preservation than the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed." said President Nixon when signing the Endangered Species Act. Around 2,100 species are on the ESA, around 1,480 can be found in part of or entirely in the U.S. and its waters.
Now what causes a species to become endangered in the first place? Well there is lots of reasons, but us humans are the main cause. Some others reasons can be their habitats were destroyed. Pollution coming into their habitats, so the food they eat, the water they drink, the river they swim in, and even the rain that falls on them, could all be polluted. It being hunted and fished way to much. Also us introducing too many exotic species. When an new exotic species comes, it can introduce new diseases and or prey on the native organisms.
One Endangered Species is the Amur Leopard. These big and beautiful cats are right on the verge of extinction with their dwindling numbers of only 30-50 left in the cold climate of southeast Russia and the northeast of China. They are extremely endangered because of its home being destroyed by forest fires, it being hunted, and people hunting its food. Another animal is only known to survive Ujung Kulon National Park on the westurn tip of Java. This animal is critically endangered because of exsissive poaching for their horns. There is no more than 70 left in the wild. This big creature is the Javan Rhinoceros. The last animal I'll to tell you about is the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. This dolphin related animal lives in China and there is only about 1000 living in the wild. They are down in numbers because of over fishing.
