What is democracy? By definition, democracy is either a form of government where people are equal and vote equally for one or more representatives , or a form of
government where the people have the most power, though it may also refer to a self-governed country (Source: Merriam Webster dictionary).
In the first definition, the people are all equal and all vote equally for one or more representatives for the people, like the US. However, this form of democracy can vary.
For example, Canada is a democracy, but it technically belongs to Britain, which is sort of a democracy oddball since there is a monarch. While the government has all the power, and is democratic, the monarch is still capable to make decisions, though this is mostly limited to approving parliament, so for all intents and purposes, Britain is a democracy. Canada is still a part of Britain, yet it has it's own democratic government at the same time, making a sandwich of democratic governments controlling one area: Canada.
The second definition states that democracy is a government where the people have the most power. In other words, the government still makes decisions, but it cannot
override the decisions of the people, and has much less power. This means that the people make most of the decisions, rather than a select group of people making all the choices arguing until they come to an agreement about something (referring to Congress). While this system has it's benefits, it doesn't often work, because most of the people don't know what the best choice for everyone is, wheareas a few congressmen and politicians might be able to figure it out after a while.
The third definition is a country that decides it's form of government and can change itself for the benefit of the people. This is how most democratic countries start,
though they often change to fit the first definition of democracy. However, these new countries often decide their form of government because they have overthrown the
original government in a revolution, which almost always means a lot of people getting killed. Even worse, during said revolution, other countrys may declare war on that country and attack it, causing even more death.
The best singular defintion we can come up with requires a combination of the three we have discussed. So, the best singular definiton of a democratic government is a
government where everyone is equal and votes for one or more representatives equally, the people have the majority of the power, yet the government still has some power.
