Equality Amanda B

What is equality? Well by dictionary definition it means, "The quality or state of being equal: the quality or state of having the same rights, social status, etc." In my personal opinion I would say that equality is fair treatment and judgment for all. Others might say it's everyone being treated exactly the same. Any way you think about it, it's the same thing. The word doesn't change and neither does it's definition.
I think equality is more of an idea. If it truly means everyone being treated exactly the same how can it be anything more than an idea? Two people, animals, plants, or even boxes are never exactly the same, so how can they have the same treatment and still have it be fair. For example, if two people have the same job and one works harder than the other, but yet they get paid the same amount of money. Sure that's equal, but is it fair? That's why, I feel, equality can never fully be accomplished unless we are all exactly the same.
However, I do think that the idea of equality is a great thing. It has done amazing things in our country. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said "I have a dream that, my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." With the idea of equality we have been able to fulfill that dream. Also another situation where the idea of equality has helped is in the women's rights movement. In the words of Charlotte Bunch, "Women have a lot to say about how to advance women's rights, and governments need to learn from that, listen to the movement and respond." With that idea of equality our government did listen and hopefully other countries governments will start to listen too.
Equality is different for everyone, but at least it has brought together so many types of people. It has helped equality for different religions, equality for races, and equality for women, just to name a few. That is one of the great aspects of the idea of equality. Other ways this idea of equality helps is at schools when it lets teachers treat and teach students the same so that they all have a good chance of learning. It's also good at home by letting parents treat children the same. These two examples can also be bad. In the school situation what if two children were two different types of learners. That means that the teacher should not treat them exactly the same. Then in the home situation, if the kids were completely different ages does that mean that they should be treated the same exact way? No. Those are two ways where the idea of equality can be good or bad.
I believe that with time we will learn that equality is not being treated the same, but being treated with fairness and without judgment. No matter how different we are. That's that I think the true meaning of equality is, but that is only my definition of what equality means. What's yours.
