“Here we come, walking down the street. We get the funniest looks from everyone we meet.” Hey, hey they were the Monkees! I am here to tell you who they were, what they did, and how they came to be.
Who are the Monkees? Well the Monkees were: actors, musicians, and a band. Their band members were: Davy Jones on guitar, Micky Dolenz on drums, Peter Tork on guitar, and Michael Nesmith on guitar. All were vocals at one point in time. And what is really funny is how they came to be the Monkees, which I will tell you later. The only Monkees left are: Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones sadly passed away on February 29, 2012.
What did the Monkees do? Well they were a band, they had a TV show, and they made a movie. They have made about 23 albums and sold about 5 million a day when they were more active. Which is more than the Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined. Wow that is a lot of albums! The Monkees were a great band and great musicians.
How did the Monkees come to be? Well this story happens to be amusing. In the year of 1966, some directors wanted to make an imaginary band that wanted to be like the Beatles. So they put out an advertisement that said they wanted some young boys to come and try out for the part of the four band members. Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith got the parts. At the time, The Beatles were called The Fab-Four and so some people called The Monkees the Prefab- Four (The Pre-Fabricated Four) because of how they were created. The funny part is, while doing the show, they actually became a band. They made albums and went on concert tours.
So now you know the surface of the story of the Monkees. You know who they were, what they did and how they came together as a group. “I’m a Believer” and now you can be a “believer”, too. J
