“Oh, now that’s music to my ears!” You might hear people say that in an everyday conversation, but do you know what it means? In the dictionary the definition of music is: an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color (www.dictionary.reference.com). In the dictionary though, they don’t have the meaning for the figurative way of music.
Although, there are many things that are music to my ears, I’m going to tell you one thing that isn’t. In my orchestra, there is an eighth grader named Ben. His younger brother, David, is also in our class. About three weeks ago Ben wasn’t there and David broke his bow, however the next day Ben was there. When Ben found out that David had broken his bow he said, “You broke your bow! You’re such an idiot, David!” That’s not music to my ears!
Next, something that’s music to my ears! When we get done with dinner sometimes my parents will say, “Do you guys want to call Grandpa and Grandma and see if they want to go for some ice cream?” We always say yes and fight over who gets to call them. So to our family going for ice cream is music to our ears!
Finally, something that I think is music to my ears. At the public school in town, there’s going to be a Halloween Dance! When I heard this I was sure that I could hear the Alleluia Chorus playing in the background! That was defiantly music to my ears!
So some music is music to your ears but some isn’t. Music to your ears is just a figurative way of saying music, you’re not actually hearing music, but it is a term of music. Now I want you to think of some ways that music isn’t actual music to your ears!
