See You at the Movies
It’s Friday night. You feel like a movie, but should you go to the theater across town and see the latest release or watch one from the comfort of your own home? Although both choices result in being able to see a show, there are advantages and disadvantages to each one and understanding those differences can help you decide which best fits your evening.
First of all, a movie theater offers films that have just recently come to the public. It can be a lot of fun to get out of the house and see a movie when it first comes out and to be able to talk with your friends about it. Whereas, at home, the most recent movie you can rent or buy is about three months old. This usually isn’t a problem since there are so many movies being made in this day and age that it isn’t hard to find something that you didn’t have time to see at the theater.
Second, there are the costs to think about. Movie theaters have skyrocketed in price. A matinee is about $8. An evening movie is about $11, and you’ll have to add another $3.50 if you want to see it in 3D. On the other hand, it is easy and a lot less expensive to rent a movie from Redbox. You can watch a movie for as little as $2 per night. The movie may have been out for a few months but a little patience can save you some money.
Sometimes it’s nice to have a snack when watching a movie. Movie theaters concessions can charge upwards of five times what it would cost to buy the same thing at the store. (Saulsbury) They may have that great-tasting popcorn but you have to ask yourself, ‘Is it worth the price?’ Instead, you could buy some goodies at the store or make a fun snack to eat while watching the movie at home. Rice crispy treats are a big hit in my family. They are simple to make and cheap - but taste great!
Finally, there is the comfort factor. Movie theaters have come a long way with stadium seating, recliner-like chairs, and the professional sound system. However, at home you get to be in your pajamas and curl up with your pillow and favorite blanket. If you missed something that was said in the movie or need to get a drink, you can always pause it or listen to it again.
Watching movies has become a national past time. The late actress Audrey Hepburn even said, “Everything I learned I learned from the movies.” Whether you decide to see that movie from a theater or at home will largely depend on how much money you have to spend and if you are in the mood for a night out and a new release or some coziness at home.
