I rolled on my two wheels to the hospital elevator. The hospital has 5 floors. All the walls are white. One of my friends, a painting robot, actually painted all of the walls. The floors are white tile. Everything is kept orderly and clean by a cleaning robot.
I have a very simple appearance. I'm the shape of a bullet, but much bigger. I have wheels to move around. My face is very similar to a humans. The only thing I'm missing is ears.
"Elevator to floor three," I said after rolling into the elevator. Pleasant music played as the elevator slowly rose up to the floor. On this floor was my favorite patient. I rolled over to her bed. She was hooked up to many wires that were keeping her alive. The doctors had tried everything to try and help her, but she only had a week left to live.
"How are you, Miss Natalie," I asked her. She was a girl of about fourteen. She had lost all her hair. Her forest green eyes slowly opened and she smiled weakly.
"I'm fine, Arty," she said kindly and gently touched my cheek. I wanted so very much to hug her while I could, but the ones who created me didn't give me arms. "I had this very interesting dream. Shall I tell you about it?"
"Yes please, Natalie."
She smiled and her eyes brightened. Her dreams were her way of living. "Well, I dreamed that you and I, yes, you were in my dream Arty, well we were on a spaceship. It was traveling at the speed of light. And you took me all over the universe. We visited all the planets. They were all so mysterious and unearthlike."
I was soon transported to that surreal world. I could see the stars flashing past us as we zoomed from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy. But the entire time, my eyes were on the girl, Natalie. All my pleasure was found in that look of delight and wonder that was painted upon her face, and in that moment, both of us forgot about the worries of her cancer.
Soon, as the sun went to sleep and the moon came out to prowl the earth, I was torn from our world of wonder.
"Well that's all. I suppose it's time for me to get some rest. Well, see you in the morning, Arty," Natalie patted my head and smiled. "I'll tell you more about our adventures tomorrow."
I stayed by her bedside and watched her fall asleep. She looked so peaceful and calm. After she had fallen asleep, I went to my other duties, attending to the other patients and putting them to bed. When the small world of the hospital was asleep, the doctors shut me in my room till morning.
The next morning, after the doctors had taken me out of the dark and musty closet, I immediately went to floor three to visit Natalie. I stared at her, and felt a surge of sadness. She lay there lifeless, but on her pale face, was a small smile. And I knew, that she had left us, and gone to that world of wonder and mysteries. And that maybe, I would join her there someday.
