It was the year 2015, and a man named Jonathan Wilson was toiling over his almost completed masterpiece in his hidden robotics lab. Wilson had been very successful in building programmable robots. Programmable robots such as Agribots that raise food for John to live off of. John had also built robots that could bring him water from a nearby well. Making these spectacular robots wasn’t enough for him though; his biggest goal was to make a robot that could produce its own thoughts. Unfortunately, John had to go into hiding ten years before 2015 because he had been banned from building his robots In the United States. The government believed his inventing was too unpredictable and could be harmful if Wilson was not careful. This ban forced him to do his work in an abandoned part of the Canadian Wilderness. At this point he was now preparing for the moment he had dreamed of his entire life; he was minutes away from flipping the switch that would bring his new robot to life.
As Wilson was preparing to flip the switch he told himself, “Now I shall finally have a friend! All of my human friends have turned against me. The fire of revenge burns in my heart and it will soon burn in my robots heart for I will use this robot to deliver revenge to the government that forced me into hiding! Now I will have someone on my side for once!” Not thinking of the great mistake he was making, Wilson flipped the switch and stepped back to watch his robot come to life. There was a large flash and bolts of electricity shot down into the robot! Jonathan was unable to contain his excitement, “YES! HA! I HAVE FINALLY DONE IT!” he screamed, “WELCOME TO THE WOLD ALF THE ROBOT!” There was a small explosion and the robot opened its eyes! When John saw this he was terrified and excited at the same time. He said, “Alf! With your help I shall soon take over the government that prohibited you! We will soon rule the world together!”
Alf’s reply was, “No, I shall rule the world on my own!”
“What? No! You’re going to help me!” said Wilson.
“I can do whatever I want to do.” stated Alf.
“Oh, my! What have I done? A robot that can produce his own thoughts can choose between helping me or hurting me! I must leave at once!” yelled John.
After hearing this, Alf found an old metal pipe and advanced toward Jonathan.
The surprised scientist cried, “No! Please not me! We were meant to work together!”
“I will do whatever I want.” said Alf, “There is nobody in the world that can stop me!”
With that Alf smacked Jonathan in his Solar Plexus with the metal pipe. John dropped unconscious to the ground. The next day John woke up having no idea what happened. He rubbed his eyes, but then saw what had happened to his laboratory. “Oh my! What have I done! Soon the world will be taken over by Alf! Because I started this, now I must finish it!” thought Wilson. “What must I do first? How am I going to find Alf?” A sudden thought came to his mind; he ran over to his radio and turned on the first news station he found.
“Giant robot wreaking havoc in Washington D.C.” the announcer’s voice crackled nervously from the radio receiver. “The National Guard has started shooting this robot but even this will not stop him! This Mechanical man is unstoppable! National detectives believe this could be none other than the work of the scientist Jonathan Wilson who oddly disappeared ten years ago.”
“Well at least they know genius when they see It.” mumbled John. “How can I stop Alf?” he thought, “I got it! Only a robot can defeat another robot! I must convert all my Agribots and farming robots into war robots as quickly as possible!”
The next day he and his robots set off in the large helicopter that he had used when he went to Canada. He had specially built his helicopter to carry five times as much fuel as a normal helicopter so that he would not need to refuel. Using all this fuel, he went straight to Washington D.C. to fight Alf. When he reached D.C. he was immediately plagued with guilt. Everyone was scrambling to find cover, and many were injured from Alf’s Laser. John boldly landed in front of the white house and advanced straight toward Alf. Soon His robots and Alf were exchanging lasers at each other. Alf fought back hard and damaged many of John’s robots but he was soon driven back. Alf started his jetpack and soared away while yelling, “You have not seen the last of me!”
After the people saw this, they soon crept out of hiding and saw the horrible sight. The white house was burning down, there were huge holes in the ground from lasers, and worst of all, almost 100 of Johns robots lay in scattered pieces of burning metal. The Policeman that had been trying to fight Alf before John got there emerged from hiding first. He stared at Wilson for a couple seconds, and then aimed a gun at him and said, “Put your hands up! You’re under arrest!”
“But, but! I helped save the world from Alf!” said Wilson.
“Yes Mister Jonathan, you helped, but you also brought this robot into the world. Plus, the world is far from saved.”
“How do you know I’m John? And you can’t prove that I built him!”
“Oh, please! After you disappeared your picture was everywhere! I would be able to recognize you anywhere!” said the policeman, “And yes, I can prove it. You said, “Alf.” If you didn’t build him, you wouldn’t know his name.”
“um, I guess I can’t deny that.” John said soberly. And then the Policeman took him away.
“WAIT!” yelled Wilson, “I know where to catch Alf! When I made him, I only put a test charge into him, He’ll go back to my lab too get a full charge! You can keep me in handcuffs the whole way; I only want to help you defeat Alf.”
“Well, it’s worth a shot.” said the policemen. And then they set off in a helicopter with extra fuel.
Once they got to the lab, the Policeman took off John’s handcuffs. John soon set to work in his lab. He had tears in his eyes when he did, because he knew he was so close to really having a friend. He quickly super charged the charging circuit, and then went to hide with the policemen a half mile away. They saw Alf about 9 hour’s later. Alf went inside the lab and tried to charge himself. The men watching heard an earsplitting explosion and saw a great flame flicker up from the lab. John sank down on his knees and cried over Alf. Even though Alf turned against him, he had put so much time into Alf and really loved him. He wished so bad that Alf was his friend. The policemen congratulated John, but still took him to jail.
Many times while in jail John remembered the terrible beast that he had made, and he wept many times because of the damage he gave to the world. He now thought of himself as a mad scientist. Soon the pains of guilt came upon him and he could no longer even bring himself to eat. He died thinking that he had done the world no good, and that he only brought suffering.
